Thermography and thermal imaging

Thermography makes it possible to visualize temperatures – and especially temperature distributions – easily and quickly. The infrared radiation from objects is evaluated in certain frequency spectra. Although many thermal images are almost self-explanatory, the physical principles of thermography must be taken into account when interpreting the images, especially when it comes to precise temperature determinations. In addition to the temperature of the object, the emission number and reflection number of various materials also have a strong influence on thermal radiation. Metallic surfaces have completely different radiation behavior than painted surfaces. Thermography is of great use in many applications, as the following examples show:

Thermal image of underfloor heating. Here it is possible to make the exact route of the heating coils visible and to check the installation.

Thermal image of a closed freezer cabinet. Here the glass panes reached temperatures below the dew point of the ambient air, so that the panes fogged up.
