Cooling systems on board of ships

140 kW absorption refrigeration system on a test stand to test seaworthiness

Refrigeration machines are required on board to air-condition the living areas, to cool provisions and to cool the cargo. Compression processes with mechanical compressors are currently used for operation on board. Work is currently underway to develop absorption systems for use on ships. The Dr.-Ing. Yves Wild Ingenieurbüro GmbH works in this area with the EAW Energieanlagenbau Westenfeld GmbH together. The first systems have already been installed on ships.

A special feature of the use of refrigeration systems on ships is recooling with seawater. Problems with corrosion on heat exchangers often arise, which can be caused by both the water quality and the system concept. The Dr.-Ing. Yves Wild Ingenieurbüro GmbH advises shipyards and ship owners on malfunctions and corrosion damage to refrigeration systems on ships.
