Conventional refrigerated ship in the port of Hamburg

Refrigerated ships have refrigerated holds in which the refrigerated goods are stowed as break bulk or on pallets. The cargo holds are cooled with the help of central refrigeration systems. Modern refrigerated ships also have the option of transporting refrigerated containers on deck, which creates approximately the same cooling capacity as in the holds.

Through the use of Controlled Atmosphere (CA) The shelf life of fruits and vegetables is extended not only by cooling, but also by changing the air composition in the room (container). Typically, the oxygen content is reduced to 1-3% (normal air: 21%) and the carbon dioxide content is increased to values of 5-25% (normal air: 0,04%). The atmospheric composition that results in the longest shelf life depends primarily on the type of fruit, the variety, the growing region and the time of harvest.

Controlled atmosphere refrigerated ships are now primarily used to transport bananas from Central America and West Africa to Europe.

The Dr.-Ing. Yves Wild Ingenieurbüro GmbH advises shipping companies on energy consumption during the overseas transport of refrigerated goods and examines them claims on board refrigerated ships. Dr.-Ing. Wild earned his doctorate on the use of controlled atmospheres in maritime transport.
