CO2-emissions in 2005

Theoretical comparison between reefer containers and stationary cooling systems on cooling ships.

The reduction of the global warming process is one of the main challenges for our society in the 21th century. Transport  is responsible for 23% of global CO2-emissions, thereof 11% are generated by the shipping industry.

Marked based regulations and the introduction of other instruments for reducing CO2-emissions are discussed in detail at the moment. the International Maritime Organization (IMO) developed the „Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)“ and the „Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI)“ in order to give ship operators a tool to measure and to improve the environmental efficiency of their ships.

The Dr.-Ing. Yves Wild Ingenieurbüro GmbH has carried out some studies on this topic lately. Those studies refer to the following questions:

  • What is the most effective way to save energy during maritime transport?
  • What is an adequate way to force the reduction of emission from political and form economical point of view?
  • Which special requirements have to be considered concerning the transport of chilled goods?
  • How is the Carbon Footprint of chilled goods influenced by the mode of transport (reefer container vs. reefer vessel)?
